eating healthy foodWe all want naturally beautiful, radiant and clear skin…yet so many of us our struggling to achieve it or dealing with adult acne, premature aging, overly oily or excessively dry skin.

The New Year is a perfect time to focus on the renewal of your health which in turn will lead to your perfect skin.

Clear Skin: Breakouts Are the Messenger

The skin is our largest organ and acts as a messenger for every thing that is going on inside your body. So really, it’s the indicator of our individual health and well-being. And a dull complexion, breakouts or aging-too-quickly skin are all signs that something a little troublesome is going on inside.

Guess what? Using expensive creams, over the counter acne products and topical prescriptions to achieve the desired glow is not the answer. They can work temporarily, but will not provide the lasting changes to keep skin youthful and pretty. Topical solutions are not the solution and only treat the symptom while ignoring the root cause of our skin issues.

Clear Skin: How to Get It!

I believe the most ideal and lasting way to achieve gorgeous skin and look years younger than our actual age is through the detoxification of diet and beauty cabinets.

Our bodies can restore, regenerate and reveal amazing results, but we need to respect what a powerful machine it is and give it the proper fuel, maintenance and attention it deserves. This can be attained with healthy food and clean, chemical-free beauty products.

By proper fuel I mean eating a clean diet of whole foods. When we put poor quality fuel into a car, it doesn’t run well. The same goes for poor quality foods that are processed and refined filled with sugar, salt and bad fat. Unfortunately 90% of the grocery store items are these poor quality options. They are obvious because they have labels, nutrition facts and health claims.

If we aim to include more real whole foods into our diet, we will see a huge difference in our skin, health and mind. And who doesn’t want to feel and look fabulous in 2013!

Clear Skin: Top 10 Beauty Foods

So what are the best foods to eat for amazing skin? This is my list of the best clean beauty foods that will revitalize and rejuvenate our best skin and health possible.

Here is a list of my top 10 beauty foods:

1. Dark Leafy Greens (kale-all kinds, collard greens, chard & mustard greens)
2. Root Veggies (sweet potatoes, squash & pumpkins)
3. Lemons
4. Nuts (especially walnuts, Brazil nuts & almonds) & Seeds (especially pumpkin, flax, sunflower, hemp & chia)
5. Fruit (especially blueberries, raspberries, pomegranate)
6. Avocados
7. Sustainable Fish (especially salmon, sardines & mackerel)
8. Cinnamon
9. Garlic
10. Non-gluten grains (brown rice, quinoa & buckwheat)

There are many more…but these are wonderful foods to feed the skin.

Clear Skin: How to Eat

It’s also not just WHAT we eat, but HOW and WHEN that makes significant improvements in our beauty and health.

Mindful eating can make or break a good meal. We are a world of multi-taskers…I encourage you to put down the phone, turn off the computer and TV, set aside the magazine or newspaper and just eat.

Then do this:

• Take 3 deep breaths before you eat, smell your food- this triggers the first stages of digestion and relaxes you for more pleasure while eating
• Continue to be aware of deep breath throughout your meal
• Eat slowly- 20 minutes minimum!
• Chew completely- the more you break the food down in your mouth the less work the rest of your digestive system has to do. It’s wonderful to actually taste the food you’re eating!

Clear Skin: When to Eat

Everyone is a little different with the WHEN part of eating. But I find this works well for myself and clients:

• Begin with a nutrition-packed breakfast like a green smoothie with added protein from hemp seeds, almond or hemp milk
• Make a balanced lunch the largest meal as the digestive system is in full steam at that point in the day
• End the day with a light dinner at least 3-4 hours before bedtime

Keep in mind, skin is last place to get nutrition, when it is radiant, you’re doing something right.
