Hormonal Adult Acne

Hormonal adult acne is affecting more women now than ever before.  Do you think your breakouts are hormone related?

Due to a number of lifestyle factors, blood sugar imbalances and diet most women dealing with breakouts in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s are experiencing hormonal adult acne.

As more women begin to suffer from adult onset acne they are turning to harsh prescription creams, bacteria killing antibiotics and chemically infused acne cleansing products, desperate for a cure.  If your breakouts are really hormonal adult acne, all of these “treatments” are just addressing symptoms which are a short term fix.

Hormonal Adult Acne: Imbalances

Hormonal imbalances can activate acne.  High levels of the hormone androgen stimulate the production of sebum, the oily substance on our skin.  Combine the increased production of oil with everyday dirt and bacteria and you’ve got yourself a breakout.

A lot of women experience breakouts just before their periods which are caused by the surge of hormones.  But when breakouts are happening all month long, a more long-term imbalance could be the issue.

Hormonal Adult Acne: Addressing Your Adrenals

How would you rate your stress on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst?  Most women say they average around 7 to 8, with a lot of ‘10 days’ in between.  That is chronic stress!

When we are stressed the “fight or flight” reaction is triggered and the stress hormone coritsol is released.  It’s basically there to save us from the stressful situation by taking attention away from the body’s other jobs like digestion, cell regeneration and detoxification so we can fight or flight.

But we’re experiencing stress from a deadline at work, or an argument with our partners- not from seeing a bear and needing to run.

Now think about how often we’re stressed and how often our adrenals, which release the cortisol, have to help us deal with it.  That means all the other jobs our bodies need to do are consistently put on hold causing your organs, bodily functions and skin to suffer.

And this is where adrenal fatigue comes into play.  Consistently pumping out cortisol to compensate for our daily stresses is extremely taxing on these little guys, as their job is to moderate our stress response.  They are also in charge of keeping other hormones balanced.  If your adrenals aren’t functioning at an optimal level, this can contribute to hormonal adult acne.

Hormonal Adult Acne: Do you have adrenal fatigue?

If you’re experiencing two or more of the following, you are probably suffering from adrenal fatigue or imbalance.

  • difficulty waking up in the morning
  • insomnia or difficulty falling asleep
  • relying on caffeine and/or sweets to keep you going
  • foggy-headedness
  • depression
  • getting sick easily, low immunity
  • anxiety
  • mood swings
  • lightheaded upon standing

Hormonal Adult Acne: Get Back in Balance

Our diet influences several hormones that actually promote those annoying breakouts.  The importance of eating healthy, whole foods (from the earth, a tree or the sea) comes to the forefront.

Our plates are filled daily with hormone unbalancing culprits like processed foods, produce grown with pesticides and animal products pumped full of antibiotics and hormones.

Instead opt for organic as much as possible with 80% of that plate filled with a rainbow of vegetables and 20% protein and gluten-free whole grains like quinoa, brown rice or millet.

When you eat is also important.  Keeping your blood sugar stable throughout the day will have a positive effect on the delicate balance of hormones.  Here are a few guidelines to follow:

  • Eat within an hour of waking- I love to start my day with a green smoothie filled with plant protein greens, chia seeds, avocado, unsweetened coconut flakes and a little frozen pineapple.
  • Eat a mindful, decent size lunch- you want this to be your biggest meal as your digestion is really on top of its game at this time.
  • Eat dinner 4 hours before bed and make it your lightest meal of the day
