How to get clear skin?  It is question on the mind of 85% of Americans at one point in their lives as they encounter skin problems like acne, eczema and rosacea.  That is a lot of people struggling with a problem that is completely preventable!

One of my most important teachings to answer the ‘how to get clear skin’ question is going deep inside to discover what goes on in your gut that is causing your skin problems.

Did you know that 70-80% of your immune system is in your gut?  If your gut is unhealthy, that very well means the rest of your health could be compromised.  Needless to say, gut health is super important!

The skin and the digestive system have a unique connection.  Skin health begins and ends in the digestive tract.  This is the root cause of skin problems- everything else we do to treat acne, eczema and aging for example is just treating the symptoms.  And we are done doing that as it doesn’t solve the core issue.

How to Get Clear SkinLet me give you a very basic lesson of digestion and the gut, as we should all get to know this very important part of our bodies.

Digestion is a process of extracting nutrients from food and preparing the leftover waste for elimination from the body.  It begins in your mouth, then onto the stomach, and then off to the small intestines where break down continues and nutrient absorption occurs.  The next stop is your large intestine also known as your colon.  Its job is to reabsorb the remaining water and turn the leftovers into, well, poop.

If you’re not eliminating the leftovers after each meal or at the bare minimum once a day, it stagnates, rots and hardens…this causes many problems including constipation, upset stomach, cramping, weight gain, depression and a weakened immune system.  If this system stays clogged, the body begins to break down.  And that can happen in the form of skin eruptions…your breakouts and rashes.

When you have a healthy inner ecosystem, a term defined by the gut health master Donna Gates, it shows up in the skin.  This means that gut health and the friendly bacterial community in your digestive tract help to create clear and glowing skin.  If things are out of whack on the surface, it is extremely likely that it can be traced to something out of whack in the gut.

This friendly bacteria that resides in our intestines and even on the surface of our skin is called mircroflora.  It plays an important role in the promotion of human health and has an enormous influence on the immune system.

The two most recognized friendly guys are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria.  They can also decrease oxidative stress and lower inflammation in the gut and throughout the body.

And guess what, two consistent features of acne are inflammation and oxidative stress which is the damage made to a cell through the oxidative process.

Bottom line, how to get clear skin depends on our friendly microflora to be healthy which leads to healthy skin.  Some of the things that destroy our good bacteria are the following:

  • birth control pills
  • antibiotics
  • stress
  • sugar
  • gluten
  • poor air, water & food quality

Antibiotics set out to kill bacteria…and that includes taking out our friendly residential bacteria in our gut, vagina and the skin itself as well which leads to yeast overgrowth.

Overuse leads to microbial resistance.  For that very reason they shouldn’t be used to treat acne, since acne is not an infection and they stop working after several months.
