It is time to get your skin ready for spring.  As the season’s change, so do the needs of your health and skin.  Spring is the natural time to cleanse and rejuvenate- and when done properly, your skin will glow naturally in return without a huge effort… because who has time for that!

Here are a couple of tips to get your spring off to a gorgeous start.

Spring Skin Tip: Eat Seasonal Spring Superfoods

Spring is nature’s New Year which lends to cleansing foods for a refreshed you.  After chowing down on all the warming and heavier foods over the winter, it’s time to opt for cleansing and detoxifying foods.  Fill your plate with bitter, astringent and pungent fruits, veggies, legumes and seeds.  Introduce these new spring goodies gradually- no need for a drastic overnight change.  If you’re still hanging on to sweet potatoes like me, slowly phase them out as you increase spring eats.

Here’s a breakdown of which foods to increase and which ones to reduce to avoid spring allergies, congestion and dull skin:

Veggies: Increase  arugula,  dandelion greens,  endive, parsley, celery, cabbage, carrots, watercress, leeks, Brussel sprouts & green beans.  Reduce: sweet potatoes, zucchini & tomatoes.

Fruits: Increase berries, apples, pears, apricots,  pomegranates, lemons & limes.  Reduce: heavy fruits like bananas, oranges & melons.

Nuts & Seeds: Increase pumpkin, sunflower & chia seeds.  Reduce: most nuts.

Legumes: Increase bean sprouts, lentils, split pea, kidney & mung.  Reduce: tofu.

Spring Skin Tip: Rehydrate & Cleanse

Rehydration after the long and drying winter months is key to flush out toxins and decongest the lymph system.  The lymph is responsible for cleansing every cell in the body, and when it’s congested we get allergies, joint pain, muffin top and breakouts to name a few.

The best way to rehydrate and decongest the lymph is to sip plain hot water every 15 minutes throughout the day.  Do this in addition to drinking half your body weight in ounces of water.  This is a mini detox in disguise!  No need for expensive juice cleanses- try this completely free cleanse for two weeks and your body will be fully rehydrated and your lymph cleansed and flowing.

Carry a thermos with you for constant hot water accessibility like this insulated one by Kleen Kanteen.  It keeps liquids hot for 6 hours and cool beverages like your green smoothie chilled as well.

Happy Spring Cleaning!  What’s your favorite spring cleaning ritual for your health?
