Now that it has officially warmed up, it’s sunscreen time!

We’ve been told in order to protect our skin from cancer-causing rays we need to slather on sunscreen. But have you ever wondered if the sunscreen itself could be cancer causing?

Oxybenzone found in sunscreens is an endocrine disruptor which can lead to certain types of cancer.

To break it down simply, it is a chemical that messes with our delicate hormone system that when messed with causes a slew of issues with our well-being, reproductive potential, cognitive function, thyroid and metabolism, digestion and hormonal balance. When our hormones are not balanced, we’ll break out as well. This is no good.

But the good news is that knowledge is power, and just as you avoid things that don’t serve your health, you are now beginning to learn how important clean and green beauty is to maintaining your vitality, clear skin and preventing future health woes.

To make the sunscreen switch easy and a no-brainer, here is what to look for and the top sunscreens brands with fewer hazardous ingredients:

• The best sunscreen is a hat and shirt with no chemicals involved…but when that isn’t always possible look for sunscreens with broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection that sit on top of the skin

• Don’t be fooled by the higher SPF like 100…that doesn’t make them safer, it’s still the same chemicals and also tricks us into thinking we don’t need to reapply when we’re in the sun (both not good)

• Speaking of reapplying, you’ll have to do that often with clean sunscreens, but that seems less annoying than getting cancer, right!?

Here are a few of the safest sunscreens according to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database:

• Aubrey Organics Natural Sun Green Tea Sunscreen SPF 30+

• Alba Bontanica Natural Very Emollient Sunblock Fragrance Free SPF 30

• California Baby No Fragrance Sunscreen Stick SPF 30+

• Coola Suncare Face Plant UV Sunscreen Unscented SPF 30 (I use this for my face!)

• Babyganics Cover Up Baby Sunscreen for Face & Body Fragrance Free SPF 50+

honest-sunscreen3-zoomI just recently bought this SPF 30 mineral one from Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company and am loving it.  Look at all the goodness it has:

  • Natural, unscented, broad-spectrum (UVA & UVB) 30 SPF mineral sunscreen – everything you need, nothing you don’t
  • Easy to apply, non-greasy, non-whitening (non-nano!) zinc oxide sunscreen provides safe, effective sun protection for the entire family
  • Zinc oxide is the ONLY active sunscreen ingredient – NO harmful chemicals (ever!)
  • Yes – it’s baby-safe! Safe for use on children under 6 months of age
  • Water resistant – tested effective for up to 40 minutes
  • Non-Nano • Hypoallergenic • Vegetarian • Non-Whitening • Biodegradable • Reef-Friendly • Water Resistant (40 minutes)

Enjoy the sunshine!
